Este estudio exploró los discursos y sus procesos de subjetivación que realizan los interventores psicosociales de infancia y adolescencia que participan en dispositivos del Estado de Chile. A partir de la metodología cualitativa, entrevistas semiestructuradas y análisis crítico del discurso. Los resultados muestran significados de la infancia y adolescencia asociados al cuidado, al peligro y a un sujeto de derechos con agencia. Este último, resiste a la violencia institucional mediante el apoyo mutuo entre pares y con los interventores. Epistemic harms associated with sexual violence, such as rape and sexual assault, are often linked to the distrust of the victim's testimonies or their inability to comprehend their own experiences. This chapter aims to demonstrate that the existing literature has largely overlooked other potential epistemic harms directly stemming from sexual violence. By analyzing the cognitive changes related to the fear and anxiety experienced by many victims of sexual violence, the chapter introduces two distinct types of epistemic harms: targeted epistemic harms, (...) which result in the formation of false beliefs about the dangerousness of certain people and contexts, thereby reducing opportunities for gaining specific knowledge from the feared and avoided individuals and contexts; and structural epistemic harms, which bring about profound shifts in core assumptions regarding one’s safety in the world and the trustworthiness of others. The continued development of General Circulation Models (GCMs) towards increasing resolution and complexity is a predominantly chosen strategy to advance climate science, resulting in channelling of research and funding to meet this aspiration. Yet many other modelling strategies have also been developed and can be used to understand past and present climates, to project future climates and ultimately to support decision-making. We argue that a plurality of climate modelling strategies and an equitable distribution of funding among them would be an (...) improvement on the current predominant strategy for informing policy making. To support our claim, we use a philosophy of science approach to compare increasing resolution and complexity of General Circulation Models with three alternate examples: the use of machine learning techniques, the physical climate storyline approach, and Earth System Models of Intermediate Complexity. We show that each of these strategies prioritises a particular set of methodological aims, among which are empirical agreement, realism, comprehensiveness, diversity of process representations, inclusion of the human dimension, reduction of computational expense, and intelligibility. Thus, each strategy may provide adequate information to support different specific kinds of research and decision questions. We conclude that, because climate decision-making consists of different kinds of questions, many modelling strategies are all potentially useful, and can be used in a complementary way. (shrink)

The peculiarities of the “domestic” and political worlds’ interactions as well as their impact on the freedom of human choice are considered in the article. The purpose of the article is to analyze political and existential being which can be transformed in the light of collecting or distracting way. The phenomenon of national security is analyzed in theoretical as well as in practical dimension. The first part of the study of separatism is connected with the modern social world’s tendency of (...) social transgression which involves blurring the rules and limits expansion. The frontier concept as the transgressive space, which can be embodied in the form of possibility of political interaction or as a place of a political conflict, is offered. Frontier understanding in the light of a cultural dialogue permits to consider it as a perspective dynamic system in the social projects of common being construction. The second part of the article reveals three main directions of transgression: philosophical and reflexive, ethical and normative, common practices. An idea of correlation between freedom of choice, manifestation of will with the human ability of critical thinking, reflection is offered and proved. Tolerance is defined to be the strategical practice in the process of launching a dialogue program of conflicting political communication. (shrink)

Introduction to the book symposium on Katherine Puddifoot’s How Stereotypes Deceive Us.

(draft) In this chapter, I examine the most significant ethical questions surrounding memory, both at the collective and individual levels, as discussed in the literature. I begin by exploring the values associated with memory, including truth, accuracy, integrity, and broader social and political dimensions. I then address the concept of a duty to remember, particularly in the context of genocide and other human atrocities, and the complex questions this concept raises. Following this, I analyze the ethical challenges posed by forgetting, (...) focusing on its collective implications for forgiveness and its individual dimensions, such as the responsibility for forgetting and the right to be forgotten. After briefly discussing memory virtues—a topic that remains underexplored in the literature—I explore the ethical considerations surrounding the wishes of individuals with severe memory loss, such as those with dementia. Finally, I summarize ethical debates related to current and hypothetical cases of memory modification, erasure, and enhancement, highlighting their potential impacts on personal identity, agency, authenticity, moral responsibility, testimony, and their overall desirability. The view of happiness that I propose in this article and derive on the basis of Aristotle’s and Henri Bergson’s ideas recommends that we must first understand life as an activity – not as a sum of accumulated experiences and things; nor a set of projects; nor fateful or haphazard events that befall us, but as a formative activity in which we play a key role. Ἐνέργεια or de l’action are at the core of life and it is by getting (...) a hold of this creative core that we stand to live happily (Aristotle) or joyously (Bergson). For both thinkers, the possibility of happiness and joy comes to the fore, to no small extent, as a certain orientation in our thinking, i.e., as φρόνησις and θεωρία, for Aristotle, and as philosophy for Bergson. Our thoughts inform our choices and actions as well as our view of the world, grounding our sense of meaning, purpose, and value of action. It is by reckoning with the ever-unfolding act of life and with our own actions in it (actions which can be vicious, senseless, and unexamined or creative and constitutive of a life well-lived) that we also take hold of the possibility of happiness and joy. In this paper the Augustinian concept of metonymy is analyzed through a commentary on de ciuitate Dei 11, 8 and other parallel texts as well as their survival in some grammatical texts produced in Visigothic Spain. This study demonstrates the enormous influence of Augustine's thought in these texts, either through an indirect tradition, or through direct reading of his writings.

The purpose of this paper is to examine how different aspects of aesthetic theory can be utilized in education so as to contribute to a workable, coherent, and multifaceted arts integration approach in elementary education. The authors begin by presenting specific aspects of aesthetic theory as indicative of the basic theoretical and philosophical approaches to the phenomenon of art. They then refer to examples of activities designed on the basis of these different aesthetic aspects, and finally, they present the findings (...) that came out of these activities’ pilot implementations in preschool and school classrooms. Based on the methodological analysis of these implementations, the authors examine the benefits of the activities deriving from each of the different aspects of aesthetic theory; how they differ depending on the aspect from which they arise; and how the implementation of these types of activities as multi-theoretical sets can reveal a new way to design a coherent and multifaceted arts integration curriculum. What the authors attempt to do is show that the variety of approaches to the definition of art and the analysis of aesthetics can be the touchstones for organizing arts integration in elementary education. Hardback, $39.99.Andrea Nightingale has written a scholarly work that will prove indispensable to restoring the centrality of religion and theology to Platonic philosophy. She demonstrates that Plato uses the language of Greek religion to inform his metaphysics and his very conception of philosophy. (...) She deftly interweaves classical scholarship with close readings of a wide range of texts in order to build her claims. She gives especially good treatments of Eleusinian mysteries and Orphic ritual. She also explores the way in which the epiphanic nature of the encounter with the Forms has a transforming influence on the philosopher's soul.In the introduction, Nightingale presents an overview of key "divinity markers" (8–23) present in the dialogues—occurrences in which the Forms are described as godlike, references to Eleusinian and Orphic mysteries, poetic narratives of epiphanic encounters, and references to the sacred spectacle. She also assesses why these references are so often overlooked in contemporary scholarship, noting many contemporary scholars' unfamiliarity with the specific nature of Greek religion, and a general movement toward secularism in philosophy. She acknowledges some notable exceptions (e.g. Mark McPherran's work), but she might have given attention to others as well. Specifically, Jill Gordon's Plato's Erotic World: From Cosmic Origins to Human Death (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2012) characterizes Platonic philosophy in terms of both striving for and alienation from the divine, and Ross Romero's Without the Least Tremor: The Sacrifice of Socrates in Plato's Phaedo (Albany: SUNY Press, 2009) on religious sacrifice in the Phaedo is another example. Still, Nightingale is accurate in her assessment of the field's tendency to ignore religious language or to assimilate it too quickly to later monotheistic traditions. Her book convincingly argues that religious language can serve a philosophical purpose in suggesting how union with Beauty and the Good is experienced. The book as a whole provides precious information about many connections between Greek religion and culture that add depth and richness to particular Platonic passages.Chapter 1 sketches out a theory of the Forms and argues that as a group they are treated as "divine." The Phaedo connects the Forms to concepts of eternality, unchangingness, and intelligibility (50). Human beings can connect with the Forms through contemplation (51). Similarly, the Republic describes the Forms as divine and the soul that contemplates them as undergoing a kind of divinization. The Form of the Good is the highest divinity, and its pursuit is an encounter with the divine. Nightingale notes that this does not mean that the Good can be grasped completely. But insofar as we can contemplate the Forms, Plato thinks that we can come to know the Good and become more like it.In chapter 2, Nightingale turns to the topic of human longing, focusing on the Symposium. We humans, Plato believes, have two different but related kinds of longing for immortality. While human beings long for a divine kind of immortality that is ultimately unreachable, they can have a partial kind of immortality through desiring the Good and giving birth to "children" of the soul. The vision of the Beautiful can be a kind of divine epiphany that leads to wonder. Nightingale delves more deeply into the concept of epiphany through texts such as the Homeric Hymn to Dionysius and Herodotus, as well as sanctuary inscriptions. Epiphanies validate the Greek religious system. Similarly, Plato's metaphysics is validated [End Page 149] by a philosophical vision of the Forms. Nightingale's detailed account of Eleusinian mysteries brings together a wide range of source material with which many philosophers will be unfamiliar, and which is especially valuable for scholars seeking to interpret Platonic passages that allude to the mysteries. The objective of this work is to understand how Heidegger is inserted in the tradition referring to the German philosophy of the resumption of Ancient Greece and how this author differs from this tradition, having a different way of relating to the Greece from its thought of history. For this, we resume some key points of the philosophical relationship between Greece and Germany, with the aim of establishing a dialogue between Heidegger, Hölderlin and Hegel about the way of understanding ancient (...) Greece as an important point in the constitution of the philosophy of history of each author, articulated by relationship between antiquity and modernity. This choice is justified by the pretense of understanding the originality of Heidegger's Greece, as Hegel is the author, belonging to German idealism, with the greatest influence on Heidegger's thought of history; Hölderlin, on the other hand, is the poet who mediates the relationship between Heidegger and the Greeks, in addition to being out of metaphysics, according to Heidegger. Throughout the text, an attempt is also made to apply Ricoeur's thesis that the German conception of Greece varies between the classical and the archaic and can take on shades of nostalgia or mourning. In an age of uncertainty and unpredictability, new vulnerabilities and inequalities have exacerbated existing problems. Phenomena such as the pandemic and recent wars have added to this complexity. Understanding the current multiple crises requires a reassessment of collective and individual responsibilities and a new approach to the concept of sustainability. Epochal changes have overturned traditional worldviews and transformed scientific and cultural paradigms. Philosophy and the social sciences now have the opportunity to refine their epistemological tools and thereby contribute to a (...) renewed public debate and to a re-imagination of the future. Within this framework, my paper aims to contribute to the debate on a multi-level and ‘asymmetric/symmetric concept of co-responsibility’ in relation to the ongoing debate on social/environmental justice, human development and sustainability, thus reframing the discourse on human rights. The paper outlines an analysis of the act of commenting within the author’s Austin-inspired speech-act theoretical framework. The general lines of that framework are concisely expounded, and it is suggested that the act of commenting should be described as belonging to Austin’s Expositives. The preliminary problem whether the act of commenting is illocutionary at all (given the absence of a performative use of the verb “to comment”) is discussed, and it is argued that nothing stands in the way of analyzing (...) it as illocutionary. Some difficulties that can be found in dealing with commenting as an illocutionary act, concerning the variable linguistic form and the diversity of functions of the utterances that can be taken to be comments, are illustrated and discussed within the theoretical framework adopted. The characterization of commenting as having (among others) also a specifically expositive illocutionary effect is illustrated. Finally, some open problems worthy of further discussion are highlighted. (shrink)

El trabajo pretende aportar a las discusiones sobre la regulación contemporánea de “la juventud en riesgo” en Argentina. Sostiene que el Estado la regula a través de distintos mensajes, entre los que se encuentran acciones represivas pero también protectivas. Para el argumento, resulta central entender al Estado como un ente complejo, dispuesto en capas, fragmentario y contradictorio, en el que los sistemas sociales y penales mantienen formas de acoplamiento ligeras. Informado por aportes feministas sobre el Estado, y por resultados de (...) una investigación empírica sobre programas de prevención del delito y de inclusión social juvenil, el artículo describe algunas estrategias protectivas y propone razones de su existencia. El conjunto de acciones protectivas permite postular la existencia de un modo “tolerante” de regular a la “juventud en riesgo”, que sería resultado de una hibridez de convicciones, ineficacias y permeabilidades. La investigación se desarrolló en el área metropolitana de Buenos Aires-Argentina, entre 2007 y 2011. Las técnicas para la construcción de los datos fueron observación participante y entrevistas en profundidad. Se analizaron, con una perspectiva de carácter etnográfico, registros de campo de 84 visitas a implementaciones de programas, testimonios producidos en 27 entrevistas, y documentos de los programas. Pocos niegan hoy que el mercado, por sí sólo, es incapaz de generar espontáneamente una distribución equitativa de los recursos sociales. Para lograr una buena articulación entre capitalismo, mercado y democracia, se ha propuesto el reconocimiento de un nuevo derecho social: el Ingreso Básico Universal que, en su versión más extendida, supone un ingreso incondicional de subsistencia, pagado por el gobierno, de manera uniforme y en intervalos regulares, tanto a nacionales como a residentes permanentes. Aunque existen disputas sobre la incondicionalidad (...) de este ingreso, es decir, sobre si el beneficiario debe o no cooperar con su trabajo a la sociedad, lo cierto es que la propuesta del Ingreso Básico Universal tiene, al menos, tres importantes atractivos. Primero, que es probablemente la primera oportunidad real en la historia para reconocer el trabajo de cuidado que realizan las mujeres en todo el mundo gratuitamente. En segundo lugar, se trataría de una propuesta visionaria que permitirá responder a la previsible problemática generada por el llamado capitalismo cognitivo y la pérdida de trabajos derivada del desarrollo de la Inteligencia Artificial. Finalmente, el Ingreso Básico Universal sería una herramienta eficaz para paliar la actual crisis del desempleo y la precariedad laboral. (shrink)

Food sovereignty can be conceptualized as a political proposal for social change in the field of agri-food relations. However, specific strategies of how to achieve this transformative potential are diverse, and context-dependent. The paper explores this diversity by examining discourses on the food sovereignty construction process in Catalonia. Using Q methodology we have explored visions held by individuals participating in the social movement for food sovereignty, identifying five discourses: activism, anti-purism, self-management, pedagogy, and pragmatism. Key strategies of transformation include social (...) mobilization, institutional negotiation, self-management, education to foster value change, and politics of the possible. The relevance assigned to ideological affinity explains different views on the subject of transformation, particularly regarding the involvement of the administration and the productive sector. As regards transformative strategies, discourses assign differing importance to the role of agency for effecting social transformation, which influences their assessment of individual actions as an effective means for social change. Forms of individualized and classic collective action currently coexist within the Catalan agri-food movement, but such diversity is not acknowledged as an effective alliance towards food sovereignty. Moreover, all discourses agree to a dual definition of food sovereignty, both as a process, that is, as democratization of the decision-making process in the agri-food sector, and as a result, that is, establishing an agri-food model alternative to the neo-liberal one. However, the discourses share an unclear view of democracy as decentralized collective decision-making that does not make explicit how this model should be implemented to achieve social control of the agri-food system. This is a review of the book Mozg - kultura - socium. Kantianskaya programma v cognitivnykh issledovaniyakh by Bazhanov V.A. The author`s main aim is a reconsideration of some fundamental principles of epistemology and philosophy of science in the light of state-of-the-art advancements of neurosciences. According to the author of the book, social and cultural revolution in neurosciences has been crucially modifying the initial Kantian program of consciousness research and the modes of linguistic representation of its results. In particular, in (...) epistemology the universal concept of transcendental subject has been altered with regard to neurobiological and social data, which concern some preconditions of cognitive activity. In philosophy of science such a shift of research perspective allows to implement a naturalistic interpretation of natural sciences, clarifies the problem of empirical foundations of mathematics and sheds a new light on the problem of apriori elements of mathematical thought. The analysis of evolutionary and neurobiological preconditions of logical thought leads to the sort of revival of psychologism program in logic, which enables author to put forward an original interpretation of the problem of plurality of logical systems. Finally, some topics of social sciences as well as problems of genesis of art, ethical and religious systems, can acquire new interpretation with respect to modern investigations in cognitive science. El propósito de mi artículo es el de explorar el extraño hecho de que siempre que alguien quiere aprender un segundo idioma, por lo general, escoge el inglés. El idioma inglés es el segundo idioma más hablado en el mundo y, casi en el mundo entero, es el segundo idioma preferido. Las razones para esta preferencia son dos: por una parte, los EEUU ganaron la Segunda Guerra Mundial y, por lo tanto, pudo imponer una hemegonía cultural y política en Occidente. (...) Por el otro, sin embargo, dadas las características del sistema liberal y republicano norteamericano, el inglés tiende a ser un idioma reflexivo, discursivo, en particular porque las políticas públicas de ese país casi siempre deben ser defendidas en un foro público. Mi hipótesis tentativa es, pues, que un idioma en el que se argumenta tenderá a expresar, por decirlo así, una suerte de disposición a la ecuanimidad, en el sentido de que allí estarán más presentes conceptos y frases que expresan la obligación de defender una posición de manera racional. Vinculo esta intuición con algunos aspectos de la herencia cultural americana, profundamente anclada en los valores espirituales y morales de Occidente, y reflexiono entonces en la especificidad filosófica y conceptual que pudiera encontrarse en el inglés. Tal vez el problema más difícil de esa disciplina llamada bioética es el de la fundamentación o justificación de sus prescripciones y recomendaciones, así como el de la elección de los criterios por los cuales un individuo decide seguir o no seguir adelante con sus accio nes. La misma definición de "dilema de la bioética " depende de la que deci damos que está siendo violado o no por las nuevas tecnologías médicas o cien tíficas. Pero un problema adicional consiste (...) en establecer si una fundamenta ción de carácter filosófico posee la fuerza suficiente para imponerse como política de salud pública. Por la general, nuestras intuiciones morales encuen tran su expresión en las decisiones jurídicas y en las intenciones del legislador. No obstante, en la que concierne a las decisiones autónomas de los miembros de una sociedad, las políticas públicas como era de esperarsese inclinan decididamente en favor de medidas de carácter paternalista, que sacrifican las diferencias entre los individuos al interés común. The development of computer science has raised ethical concerns regarding the potential negative impacts of machine learning tools on people and society. Some examples are pornographic deepfakes used as weapons of war against women; pattern recognition designed to uncover sexual orientation; and misuse of data and deep learning by private companies to influence democratic elections. We contend that these three examples are cases of automated evil. In this article, we defend that the concept of forbidden knowledge can help to inform (...) a coherent ethical framework in the context of machine learning research. We conclude that restricting generalised access to extensive data and limiting access to ready-to-use codes would mitigate potential harms caused by machine learning tools. In addition, the notions of intersectionality and interdisciplinarity should be systematically introduced in data and computer science research. (shrink)

La obra es analizada desde la perspectiva del problema de la diversidad de caracterizaciones que obtiene la filosofía de Nietzsche en el pensamiento filosófico contemporáneo y el desafío que supone evaluar la filosofía de Nietzsche a la luz de nuestra sensibilidad democrática. Se examinan los capítulos de la obra apuntando algunas de las incorrecciones y aspectos más problemáticos de su (...) argumentario "anti-nietzscheano", incidiendo en la importancia del estudio de fuentes (Quellenforschung) y de la historia de las ediciones de la obra de Nietzsche.
